A contractor quoting a mini-split install in Sharkey County has to size the system against a real cooling load, not a guess. Homes in Sharkey County, MS run cooling about five months a year, from May through September. The compressor starts and stops across that entire stretch, and every cycle puts mechanical stress on the contactor, the refrigerant lines, and the coil connections. An undersized unit runs longer cycles to keep up, which accelerates wear on exactly those parts. Proper load calculation and tight line-set work at install are what determine whether those components hold up or start failing while the unit is still relatively new.

Most of the housing in Sharkey County was wired for systems that drew far less current than a modern mini-split requires. Half the homes in Sharkey County, Mississippi were built in 1977 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A contractor sizing a new installation has to look at the service panel first, because a box that was adequate when the house was built often is not adequate for what gets connected to it now. What the panel actually has room for shapes both what gets ordered and what gets added before the unit goes in.

What a Mini-split Installation Puts in Your Home

Isometric illustration of a cutaway house showing two wall-mounted indoor air conditioning units connected by line sets to an outdoor condenser unit on the ground outside.

The indoor air handler mounts high on an interior wall in the room being served, pulling air across its coil and pushing conditioned air back into the space. Outside, the condenser unit sits on the ground or on a wall bracket, housing the compressor and the components that move heat between indoors and out.

A set of refrigerant lines runs through a small penetration in the wall to connect the two units, bundled alongside a condensate drain line and the power and communication wiring. A disconnect box goes on the exterior wall near the condenser, giving the system a local shutoff point separate from the main panel.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines exactly how each piece is positioned in your home.
