Sizing a mini-split for a Grenada County home is not a step a contractor estimates from a floor plan alone. The load calculation has to account for what the compressor will actually be asked to do each year. Homes in Grenada County, MS run cooling about five months a year, from May through September. Compressors cycle on and off through all of those months, and the contactor and condenser fan follow every cycle. A unit that is undersized runs longer per cycle and reaches its wear limits earlier than the manufacturer's rated life assumes. A contractor quoting an installation here sets the capacity against that compressor load, then checks that the line set length and the refrigerant charge are correct at commissioning, because errors in either show up fast when the system rarely sits idle.

Residential electrical panels in a house built for older load demands often fall short of what a mini-split draws at startup, and a contractor has to confirm service capacity before the equipment is even ordered. Half the homes in Grenada County, Mississippi were built in 1983 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). That means the panel is the first thing a contractor prices into the job, not an afterthought once the unit arrives. If the existing service is undersized, bringing it up to spec is part of the installation scope.

The Mini-split Components a Contractor Accounts for During Installation

Isometric illustration of a cutaway house showing two wall-mounted mini-split indoor units connected by line sets to a single outdoor condenser beside the exterior wall.

The indoor air handler mounts high on an interior wall in the room being conditioned, and it is the piece a homeowner sees every day. The outdoor unit sits on the ground or a pad outside the house and holds the compressor and the condenser coil. Each indoor unit connects to one outdoor unit or to a shared multi-zone outdoor unit, depending on how many rooms the system serves.

A refrigerant line set runs through a small hole in the wall to connect the indoor and outdoor units, bundled alongside a condensate drain line that carries moisture outside. A wall-mounted thermostat or remote control gives the occupant command over each zone independently.

The drawing shows a standard layout, and a licensed contractor determines what fits this house and how each component gets positioned within it.
